In
1997 a major change occured in Cuba with regard to accomodations.
The Cuban government allowed residents to rent rooms in their
houses to tourists, and are called Casas Particulares. At least
half of all 'regular' hotels are 50% owned by the Cuban government.
Other hotels are 100% owned by the Cuban government
|
Since
that time, the owners of the Casas help to promote their homes
by distributing business cards, like the one below, and by advertising
on websites such as Cuba-Junky.com. You will see many of these
cards while staying in Cuba.
Btw,
Cuba-Junky is not getting commission from any casa particular
owner!

The
Casas Particulares
Cubans
with a special license can rent up to two rooms in their homes
to foreigners. You can recognize from the street where the Casas
are by seeing the blue triangular signs, such as the one above,
which Casas owners must post on their front doors. The signs will
also read: 'Arrendador Inscripto'.
If
you choose to stay in one of these Casas, you'll pay about $20
a night; meals are extra. E.g. Breakfast is $2, and dinner is
about $6, however, prices will vary between cities and towns.
|
| The
owners of the blue triangle Casas pay the government $50 per month
for the sign, and in addition, pay between $100-250 as a tax to
the government, depending on its location. |

Take the address lists provided by Cuba-Junky with you. You
can get to them by clicking on the city that you wish to visit
at our 'Casas Particulares' site.
Feel
like coming home …
-
After a long day of walking, sightseeing or a trip to the
beach, it's good to come 'home'. People are extremely friendly
at the Casas, we have found. If they are full up, they'll
call around for you in the neighbourhood to get you accomodations.
